I checked out the Dead or Alive Plus Vita demo over the weekend and came away extremely impressed. It really makes the Mortal Kombat port look a full generation behind. Ended up playing the demo A LOT and it’s left me in a bit of a bind.
My plan was to eventually pick up Plus, but at a discounted price so I can justify purchasing some overpriced DLC. I was also going to avoid Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate entirely.
That all changed with the latest reveal that Rachel is in the game. Upping the ante further is the fact that several DLC costume packs will be included in the game for free and the retail price is $39.99. The major downside is that Ulitmate is console only at this time and hasn’t been announced for the Vita. It’s no sure bet there will be a Vita version, although if there is one, it won’t be for another 6 months after Ultimate.
As of today, DOA5 Plus is not discounted by much. The only semi-decent deal is a digital bundle on the PSN store that include Plus and the PSP DOA Paradise for $49.99.
So either I wait for further discounts on Plus, wait two months for Ultimate or wait 6 months (?) for Ultimate Plus that may never come.
The sensible answer seems to be to purchase Plus right now if that’s the experience I’m craving. Skip the DLC for now and pick up Ultimate if I’m still hungry for more DOA in September.
If I do end up picking up both Plus and Ultimate, I would own three versions of DOA5 for a total $140 out of pocket (DOA5 $59.99, DOA5 Plus $39.99, DOA5 Ultimate $39.99).
I have no problem throwing money at games I love, but $140 within a year seems excessive. Then again, if I knew this spending would lead to Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 being greenlit… well $140 would be a small price to pay indeed.
