It gives a lot of ingenuity and draws character presence. Think of FFX's Lulu and her skirt that isn't really a skirt so much as it is a bit of fabric affixed to multiple leather belts. You don't think, man, that isn't gonna hold up to much of a Flare thing. You think, w00t! And then you consider how an indicator such as Dragon Quest 8's Appearance stat might have a little more importance than mere eye candy. You just don't care; it's attractive.
